Bollywood Controversy: Poonam Pandey’s Fake Death Stunt Sparks Outrage and Celebrity Backlash for Cervical Cancer Awareness Campaign

Actress Poonam Pandey

Poonam Pandey’s recent controversial stunt, in which her management falsely declared her dead on Instagram, has stirred up a wave of criticism. The actor-model later clarified that it was a publicity stunt with a purpose—to raise awareness about cervical cancer. However, the public and celebrities, including Babil Khan, the son of the late Irrfan Khan, expressed strong disapproval.

Babil Khan took to his Instagram stories to condemn the fake death announcement, stating, “I don’t know what the f**k that was about Poonam Pandey’s demise, but it just feels wrong.” He emphasized that spreading awareness about cancer should not involve resorting to false death statements and urged against manipulating such sensitive issues for attention.

Having lost his father to neuroendocrine cancer in 2020, Babil Khan expressed anger at the misuse of cancer awareness for personal gain. Other celebrities like Kangana Ranaut, Bipasha Basu, Tahira Kashyap, Mini Mathur, and Gulshan Devaiah also voiced their criticism on social media.

Poonam Pandey defended her actions in a series of Instagram reels, revealing that her intention was to spark conversations about cervical cancer. She apologized to those she may have hurt and justified the extreme measure as a means to draw attention to the lack of discourse on the topic.

In her video, Poonam stated, “I am alive. I didn’t die of cervical cancer. Unfortunately, I can’t say that about those hundreds and thousands of women who have lost their lives because of cervical cancer.” Despite the backlash, she claimed success in bringing attention to the important issue of cervical cancer awareness.
