Ruturaj Gaikwad replaces MS Dhoni as the Captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

In a surprising turn of events, MS Dhoni, the seasoned captain of Chennai Super Kings (CSK), has relinquished his captaincy duties just before the commencement of IPL 2024. Ruturaj Gaikwad, originally slated to succeed him as captain, will now lead the Yellow Army, as officially confirmed by the IPL website.

Dhoni, who had led CSK since the inception of the tournament, made the decision to step down from his captaincy just before the IPL 2022 season. Ravindra Jadeja assumed leadership responsibilities in his absence. However, following CSK’s disappointing performances under Jadeja’s captaincy, the management requested Dhoni to reconsider his decision.

Speculation has been rife regarding the participation of Dhoni, who has now reached the age of 42. Although he appeared to be in peak physical condition during his recent practice sessions, there comes a time when every athlete must consider retirement. Consequently, rumors have once again emerged suggesting that this IPL season could potentially be Dhoni’s final year in the league.

Ruturaj Gaikwad made his IPL debut in 2020 and has since remained loyal to one franchise: Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Over the years, he has emerged as a prominent figure, showcasing remarkable consistency at the top of the order. In 52 matches, he has amassed 1797 runs at an impressive average of 39.07 and a strike rate of 135.52. His standout IPL season came in 2021, during which he accumulated 635 runs in 16 matches at an outstanding average of 45.35.

Gaikwad will lead CSK for the first time in their IPL 2024 opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.
