Airtel is set to provide seamless connectivity to commuters on India’s inaugural underwater metro system.

Bharti Airtel, a major telecommunications service provider in India, has unveiled an innovative project aimed at offering uninterrupted connectivity to metro commuters. The company has deployed high-capacity nodes 35 meters below the Hooghly River, ensuring seamless connectivity for passengers traveling on Kolkata’s East-West Metro corridor, which spans 4.8 kilometers from Howrah Maidan to the Esplanade.

Airtel has made substantial infrastructure investments to support this initiative, anticipating its commercial launch in the near future. This milestone makes Airtel the first operator to provide continuous connectivity across the entire 4.8-kilometer stretch of the East-West Metro corridor.

To enable this groundbreaking service, Airtel has established fiber connectivity along the 4.8-kilometer stretch, linking Howrah Maidan, Howrah Station, Mahakaran, and Esplanade stations. Additionally, high-capacity nodes have been installed at each station to ensure seamless connectivity, enabling commuters to enjoy high-speed 5G internet, uninterrupted voice calls, and seamless data transmission. This enhancement aims to improve the daily commute experience and enable customers to stay connected and productive while on the move.

Ayan Sarkar, CEO of Bharti Airtel for West Bengal and Odisha, expressed the company’s commitment to pushing boundaries to better serve its customers. He highlighted the transformative impact of this initiative, which will provide commuters with access to high-definition video streaming, gaming, instant messaging, photo uploading, and more, all while enjoying the scenic route beneath the Ganga River.

India’s first underwater metro, linking Howrah and Kolkata, is a remarkable engineering achievement that is poised to open to the public soon. Operations are scheduled to commence in June 2024.
