The Election Commission of India (ECI) dealt a significant setback to Sharad Pawar by ruling on Tuesday that the faction led by his nephew Ajit Pawar constitutes the authentic ‘ Nationalist Congress Party’ and granted the faction permission the utilize the ‘Clock’ symbol for the party.

In the test of majority, the poll body noted that the total number of NCP MLAs in the Maharashtra state assembly stood at 81. Out of this Ajit Pawar submitted affidavits of 57 MLAs in his support while Sharad Pawar had only 28 affidavits.

” In view of the findings, the ECI holds that faction led by Ajit Pawar is the Nationalist Congress Party and is entitled to use its name and reserved symbol ‘clock’ for the purpose of their election symbol order”, ECI statement read.
