Ancient Vishnu Idol Recovered from Karnataka

A Centuries-old Vishnu Idol and a shivling were found in the Krishna riverbed in Karnataka.

An ancient idol of Lord Vishnu was unearthed recently from the Krishna river at a village in Karnataka‚Äôs Raichur district, in which all ten incarnations are featured around its ‘aura’. Besides the statue, an ancient Shivalinga was also found in the river.

This Vishnu idol found in the Krishna river basin has got special features, Dr Padmaja Desai a lecturer in ancient history and archaeology at Raichur University said while speaking about the Vishnu idol. , adding that the aura around Vishnu shows ‘dashavatara’ such as Matsya, Koorma, Varaha, Narasimha, Vamana, Rama, Parashurama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki.

Archaeologists believe that the idol belonged to the 11th or 12th Century AD.

The recovery was made during a bridge construction in Raichur, Karnataka. It is believed the idols could date back to 1,000 years.

The Vishnu idol and the Shivling are now in the possession of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
