Anurag Kashyap sees Ram temple inauguration as ‘advertisement’, denounces ‘fascism posing as democracy

Anurag Kashyap, the renowned filmmaker, expressed his views on the recent inauguration of the Ram temple in Ayodhya, calling it an ‘advertisement’ for the current state of affairs in the country. He criticized the event, stating that it was akin to a 24-hour advertisement, with various prominent figures from sports, cinema, business, and politics in attendance.

Speaking at an event in Kolkata, Kashyap highlighted his atheistic beliefs, attributing them to his upbringing in Varanasi, where he witnessed the commercialization of religion firsthand. He emphasized that the construction of the temple was not about religious devotion but rather a political move to exploit public sentiment.

Kashyap voiced concerns about the control of information through algorithms, suggesting that those in power manipulate technology to serve their interests. He criticized the lack of unity among dissenters and proposed radical measures, such as destroying mobile phones, as a symbolic act of resistance against surveillance and control.

According to Kashyap, the focus should shift from superficial battles, such as tearing down posters, to addressing systemic issues. He lamented the distraction caused by trivial debates and urged people to recognize the larger struggle against what he perceives as fascism masquerading as democracy.

While Kashyap has reduced his social media presence, he continues to engage in public discourse, advocating for greater awareness and action against perceived threats to democracy and individual freedoms. His remarks reflect a deep-seated scepticism towards authority and a call for collective action to challenge entrenched power structures.

Kashyap’s comments underscore the complex socio-political dynamics at play in contemporary India, where issues of identity, religion, and governance intersect, shaping public discourse and activism.
