Taking a significant stride towards realizing the vision of a transformative connectivity in Barak Valley, the Steering Committee for Green Field Airports under the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has officially endorsed ‘site clearance’ for the planned green field airport in Doloo, Cachar district, Assam.

The Union Civil Aviation Ministry’s steering committee’s recommendation aligns with the Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy of 2008, a plan by the Government of India for establishing new airports nationwide. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) had applied for ‘Site-Clearance’ under this policy for the Doloo airport in Cachar, Assam. The proposal underwent a thorough review, including consultations with key stakeholders like the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Ministry of Defence (MoD), before being presented to the steering committee.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to improve regional air connectivity in the North Eastern Region, especially through schemes like UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik), launched in 2016. UDAN aims to make air travel more affordable and accessible, and several airports in the North East, such as Pakyong and Itanagar (Hollongi), have already been constructed under this scheme. The recommendation for site clearance for the Doloo airport reflects the commitment to expanding India’s aviation network, creating new connectivity opportunities, and supporting regional development.
