Devdutt Padikkal, the talented left-handed batter, marked his Test debut in the fifth and final match against England at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala. The momentous occasion was commemorated with India’s seasoned all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin handing over the Test cap to Padikkal, who stepped into the arena alongside England’s Jonny Bairstow. Padikkal’s inclusion came as a replacement for Rajat Patidar in India’s XI, as per reports by Hindustan Times on February 29, making him the fifth Indian cricketer to debut in the series.

Padikkal’s journey to the Test arena has been marked by impressive performances in domestic cricket. Having played 31 first-class matches, he has amassed 2227 runs at an average of 44.54, including six centuries and 12 half-centuries. His exceptional form in the current season, where he averaged 92.66 with three centuries in just four matches, earned him a well-deserved spot in the national team.

Prior to his Test debut, Padikkal showcased his prowess during India A’s encounters against England Lions in Ahmedabad, notably scoring a century in the second unofficial Test. His consistency and ability to perform under pressure have been lauded by cricket enthusiasts and selectors alike.

Despite initial concerns about Patidar’s fitness, Padikkal’s seamless transition into the playing XI reflects his readiness to take on the challenges of international cricket. However, his debut match against England at the picturesque venue in Dharamsala saw him waiting for his turn to showcase his batting skills as England captain Ben Stokes elected to bat first after winning the toss.
