‘Dog ate biscuit after I handed it to its owner’: Rahul Gandhi shrugs off row

A video showing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi offering a biscuit to a supporter after a dog refused it sparked controversy. Issuing a clarification, Gandhi said he “handed over the biscuit to the dog’s owner, and then the dog had it”.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday shrugged off the furore over a viral video that apparently showed him offering a biscuit to a supporter after a dog refused it.

Addressing the controversy the video ignited, Gandhi clarified that he had approached the dog and its owner “because the dog was shivering” and then “handed over the biscuit to the owner” as the dog seemed scared.

“I called the dog and the owner. The dog was nervous, shivering and when I tried to feed it, the dog got scared. So I gave biscuits to the dog’s owner and the dog ate them from his hand. I don’t understand what’s the issue with it,” he said.

Rahul Gandhi also took a swipe at the BJP over the claims that the dog owner was a Congress worker. “No, where was he a Congress worker?…I don’t understand BJP’s obsession with dogs. What harms have dogs caused the BJP?” Rahul Gandhi said.

The Gandhi scion found himself at the centre of a controversy after the BJP circulated a video on social media, where he was seen offering a biscuit to a dog during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Jharkhand.

A video posted by the march’s official platform shows Rahul Gandhi petting a shivering puppy and offering it a biscuit. When the dog hesitates, the Lok Sabha MP hands the biscuit to a nearby supporter, seemingly the owner, who feeds his dog.

However, a separate video shared by IT cell head Amit Malviya portrays the incident differently. It focuses solely on the dog refusing the biscuit, after which Gandhi appeared to hand it to a supporter. It does not show what happened afterwards. The clip, which quickly went viral, sparked a heated debate and criticism from BJP leaders, who accused Gandhi of disrespecting his supporters.

While sharing the video, Malviya drew a connection between the incident and a recent remark by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who allegedly likened party workers to dogs. “Just a few days ago… Congress President compared… booth agents to dogs… now Rahul Gandhi is feeding biscuits to a dog… when the dog did not eat, he gave the same biscuits to his worker,” Malviya wrote on X.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, a former Congress leader, also joined the chorus of condemnation. He attacked Rahul Gandhi and said he and his family could not make him “eat the biscuit”. “I am a proud Assamese and Indian. I refused to eat and resigned from the Congress,” he said.

Reacting to the Assam Chief Minister’s statement, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala said, “This is why nobody with self respect can stay in Congress.. today Himanta Sharma ji has been vindicatedâ€æ Rahul first offers biscuit to dog. When dog refuses he gives the same biscuit to Congress karyakarta. Glad people like Himanta ji & me had too much dignity to remain here & be treated like dogs! Shameful congress culture to treat everyone like slaves and dogs of first family.”

All too soon, Shehzad Poonawala was given a reality check by his own brother and political commentator Tehseen Poonwala. Resharing the video, Tehseen said, “Rahul Gandhi ji gives the biscuit to the dog parent who feeds his dog! Our mom feeds Hatchi and Moon Poonawalla with her hand. My mother-in-law feeds Miyake and Koko with her hands. Moreover our mom has adopted a handsome Indie called Sheru at Jamat Khanna (her mosque) and she feeds him too.
