“Endured Much”: Jagdeep Dhankhar and M Kharge Clash Over Regulations

Strained Relations: Parliamentary Leaders Clash Over Protocol and Respect

The tension surrounding the potential alliance between Jayant Chaudhary-led RLD and the NDA, along with the ensuing concern within the troubled INDIA alliance, overflowed into Parliament on Saturday, triggering a heated confrontation between Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Rajya Sabha chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar. Accusing the Congress of disrespecting a Bharat Ratna recipient, Mr Dhankhar sparked Mr Kharge’s ire, leading to a terse exchange.

The altercation was initiated when Jayant Chaudhary, representing the INDIA alliance, expressed gratitude towards the BJP-led NDA government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the posthumous announcement of Bharat Ratna for his grandfather, Chaudhary Charan Singh. Opposition leaders objected, prompting Mr Dhankhar to urge Mr Kharge to maintain order among his colleagues or address the House himself. Responding, Mr Kharge highlighted his party’s appreciation for the awardees but questioned the basis of Mr Chaudhary’s speech.

Asserting the need for judicious discretion in using parliamentary rules, Mr Kharge criticized Mr Dhankhar for allowing selective participation. This led to Mr Dhankhar’s retort, defending his actions and expressing dismay at Mr Kharge’s remarks, citing his efforts to honour individuals without strict adherence to rules.

The exchange escalated, with Mr Dhankhar emphasizing his commitment to upholding decorum and respect, particularly regarding Chaudhary Charan Singh’s legacy and contributions to agriculture.

The contentious atmosphere surrounding the potential collaboration between the Jayant Chaudhary-led Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), and the resulting unease within the INDIA alliance, overflowed into the parliamentary proceedings on Saturday. This led to a heated exchange between Mallikarjun Kharge, the President of the Indian National Congress, and Jagdeep Dhankhar, the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

The confrontation was sparked when Jayant Chaudhary, representing the INDIA alliance, expressed gratitude towards the BJP-led NDA government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for announcing the posthumous conferment of the Bharat Ratna on his grandfather, Chaudhary Charan Singh. This gesture was met with objections from opposition leaders, prompting Mr Dhankhar to urge Mr Kharge to restore order among his party members or address the House himself. In response, Mr Kharge acknowledged the merit of the awardees but questioned the basis on which Mr Chaudhary was permitted to speak.

Mr Kharge emphasized the need for the prudent exercise of discretion in adhering to parliamentary rules, criticizing Mr Dhankhar for what he perceived as selective enforcement. This led to Mr Dhankhar defending his actions, expressing disappointment at Mr Kharge’s remarks, and citing instances where he had allowed deviations from procedural norms to honour deserving individuals.

The tension escalated further, with Mr Dhankhar underscoring his commitment to maintaining decorum and respect, particularly regarding the legacy and contributions of Chaudhary Charan Singh to the agricultural sector. This exchange underscored broader concerns about parliamentary conduct and the interpretation of rules governing participation and discourse within the legislative body.
