On March 5th, millions of users worldwide experienced a disruption in accessing social media giants Facebook and Instagram, as well as video streaming platform YouTube. The outage, which began around 8:30 pm on Tuesday, resulted in users being logged out of their profiles and encountering difficulties in loading apps, delivering messages, and refreshing feeds.

According to Meta spokesperson Andy Stone, the outage was caused by a technical issue that affected the functionality of their services. Stone reassured users that the problem was swiftly addressed, apologizing for any inconvenience caused. However, the disruption persisted for a considerable period, leaving users frustrated and turning to alternative platforms to report issues.

Reports from Downdetector.com revealed the extent of the outage, with over 300,000 reports of Facebook being inaccessible and more than 20,000 reports for Instagram. Users encountered error messages such as ‘Log in again; session expired; couldn’t refresh feed,’ indicating widespread issues with the platforms.

In addition to Facebook and Instagram, WhatsApp Business, owned by Meta Platforms, also faced disruptions, with approximately 200 reports of outages. Meta’s status dashboard acknowledged the problems and assured users that they were actively working to resolve them.

The outage prompted users to seek alternative means of communication, leading to increased activity on other social networks such as X and messaging platforms like WhatsApp. Additionally, online portals were inundated with reports of network outages affecting Google and Meta-owned platforms.

As frustration mounted among users, Meta’s response was swift, with spokesperson Andy Stone issuing updates via social media platforms, reassuring users that the company was addressing the issue.

Shortly after services resumed on Meta platforms, reports emerged of YouTube experiencing a similar outage, with users encountering errors while attempting to access the homepage. However, the disruption was short-lived, and YouTube services were quickly restored.

The outage serves as a reminder of the reliance on digital platforms for communication and highlights the vulnerabilities inherent in such systems. While the exact cause of the disruption remains undisclosed, Meta’s prompt response and efforts to rectify the issue were commendable, albeit leaving millions inconvenienced for a brief period.

Reacting to the outage, Meta responded. “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now,” Meta spokesperson Andy Stone said in a post on X social media. Soon after the outage ended on Meta platforms, reports arrived that YouTube, a popular video streaming site, resumed its services after a short outage. Earlier, numerous users reported encountering errors while attempting to load the YouTube homepage. User had earlier switched to another social network X, WhatsApp and other online portals to report network outages faced while connecting to Google and Meta-owned platforms.
