IRDAI removes age restrictions on health insurance policies.

IRDAI has made a groundbreaking decision to remove the age limit of 65 years for buying health insurance, aiming to broaden coverage and enhance financial security against healthcare expenses.

The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has made a significant move to expand the health insurance market and offer greater financial security against healthcare expenses. They have removed the age limit of 65 years for individuals buying health insurance policies. This change represents a major shift from previous norms that restricted comprehensive coverage for individuals beyond the age of 65.

This decision aims to create a more inclusive and accessible healthcare ecosystem, ensuring that people of all ages have adequate protection against unforeseen medical costs.

Effective from April 1, this amendment allows anyone, regardless of age, to purchase a new health insurance policy, thus widening the scope of insurance coverage across different age groups.

Insurers are now required to offer health insurance products tailored to various age groups, including senior citizens, students, children, maternity, and others, as per guidelines from the Competent Authority.

Insurers must also provide health policies to individuals with pre-existing medical conditions, such as cancer, heart or renal failure, and AIDS, ensuring comprehensive coverage for everyone.

To make it easier for policyholders, insurers can offer premium payment options in installments, easing the financial burden associated with healthcare expenses.

The regulation also mandates unrestricted coverage for AYUSH treatments, including Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy, up to the sum insured without any limitations.

Policyholders with benefit-based policies can now file multiple claims with various insurers, providing greater flexibility and choice. Additionally, a specialized channel will address the complaints and claims of senior citizens, ensuring a more tailored and responsive approach to their needs.\
