Legendary Singer Pankaj Udhas Dies at the Age of 72

Legendary singer Pankaj Udhas, who gave memorable hits like ‘Chitthi aayi hai’, died after a prolonged illness, his family confirmed today. He was 72.

“With a very heavy heart, we are saddened to inform you of the sad demise of Padma Shri Pankaj Udhas on 26 February due to a prolonged illness,” read a statement from the Udhas family. 

According to a family source cited by the news agency PTI, Udhas, renowned for his contributions as a playback singer in Hindi cinema with notable films such as “Naam,” “Saajan,” and “Mohra,” passed away at approximately 11 am at Breach Candy Hospital.

‘Chandani Raat Mein’, ‘Na Kajre Ki Dhaar’, ‘Aur Ahista Kijiye Baatein’, ‘Ek Taraf Uska Ghar’, and ‘Thodi Thodi Piya Karo’ stand among his timeless ghazals.

The singer, who also initiated a talent hunt TV show titled ‘Aadab Aarz Hai’, graced stages worldwide with his performances and boasted numerous albums to his credit.

Immediately following the announcement of his demise, tributes flooded in. Prime Minister Narendra Modi remarked that Pankaj Udhas’ “ghazals resonated deeply with the soul.”

“We mourn the passing of Pankaj Udhas Ji, whose singing conveyed many emotions and whose Ghazals struck a chord directly with the heart. He was a luminary of Indian music, his melodies traversing through generations. I reminisce about our various interactions over the years,” stated the Prime Minister.

“His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the musical realm—condolences to his family and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” he added.
