Madhya Pradesh’s ‘Bag Less School’ Initiative for Class 1 to 12 from coming Session

The Madhya Pradesh government has taken a noteworthy step by introducing a ‘bagless school’ day once a week for students in classes 1 to 12, starting from the upcoming academic session of 2024-25. This initiative is aimed at reducing the stress experienced by students and will be applied in both government and private schools throughout the state. Additionally, the state government has issued a notice specifying the weight limits for students’ school bags, which vary based on their respective classes.

As per the notice, students in classes 1 and 2 are advised to carry bags weighing between 1.6 to 2.2 kg, while those in classes 3 to 5 should carry bags weighing between 1.7 to 2.5 kg. Similarly, students in classes 6 and 7 should carry bags weighing between 2 to 3 kg, and for students in class 8, the recommended weight limit is between 2.5 to 4 kg. Additionally, for students in classes 9 and 10, the prescribed weight limit is set between 2.5 to 4.5 kg.

The weight of school bags for students in classes 11 and 12 will be determined by the school management committee, taking into account the streams chosen by the students. Uday Pratap Singh, the Minister of School Education, elaborated on the reasoning behind this decision, stating, “To alleviate stress among children caused by heavy bags, we have categorized the weight limits according to their respective classes. Younger students will have lighter bags weighing up to 2.2 kg, while older students will have bags weighing up to 4.5 kg.

Additionally, we have introduced the concept of ‘bagless school’ once a week,” he further elaborated on the purpose of this initiative, stating that children should have the opportunity to enjoy their day at school by engaging in games, sports activities, cultural programs, and music, allowing school to be a joyful experience rather than a source of stress. The Madhya Pradesh government has emphasized the strict implementation of the school bag policy starting from the new academic session of 2024-25.

The School Management Committee shall prepare such a timetable that students shall not need to take all the textbooks and copies and bag weight shall not be more than the fixed limit.

The classes of computer, moral education, general knowledge, health physical education, sports, and arts shall be conducted without books. School management shall arrange so that students of Class 8 can get the facility to keep text books, workbooks, and other materials in the school itself.
