Paul Pogba Banned for Four Years After Failed Doping Test

On Thursday, reports surfaced regarding a four-year suspension handed to Juventus’ star player, Paul Pogba. The former Manchester United midfielder had been provisionally suspended since September after testing positive for testosterone. Allegations of doping led Italy’s sports prosecutors to seek a four-year ban for the French World Cup winner. Pogba’s suspension was initiated following Juventus’ 3-0 triumph over Udinese in the Serie A opener back in September.

The anti-doping hearing for Pogba was rescheduled from January 18 to an undisclosed date, with Italy’s anti-doping tribunal acceding to the requests made by the French midfielder’s legal team. Prior to this, Pogba’s representatives declined to provide any comments regarding the anti-doping hearing. It was widely anticipated that Pogba would potentially face a substantial suspension from football following the proceedings at the NADO tribunal in Rome. In December, anti-doping prosecutors had pushed for the maximum penalty of a four-year ban for the Juventus midfielder.

Pogba had the opportunity to halve the duration of his requested ban if he could prove that his doping was unintentional. Successfully demonstrating that the banned substance was consumed out of competition could have led to a suspension of only a few months for the Juventus midfielder. As reported by the news agency AFP, Pogba’s representatives argued that the presence of testosterone resulted from a dietary supplement prescribed by a doctor whom the Frenchman had consulted in the United States. Pogba retains the option to appeal the decision at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, based in Switzerland.

A potential four-year ban for Juventus’ standout player, Pogba, could spell the end of the career for the FIFA World Cup champion. The 30-year-old notably contributed to France’s victory in the 2018 FIFA World Cup final against Croatia, scoring in their 4-2 triumph. During his initial stint with Juventus from 2012 to 2016, Pogba amassed 178 appearances. However, since returning to Juventus from Manchester United, he has been plagued by injuries. His absence from the 2022 World Cup was attributed to a knee injury. Pogba has featured in just two matches for Juventus this season, and in the previous season, he participated in only six Serie A games for the Bianconeri.
