India’s Leap into Advanced Missile Technology: Mission Divyastra Unveiled

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced today a groundbreaking development in India’s defence capabilities, unveiling the “Mission Divyastra” project. This indigenous initiative introduces a landmark weapons system that promises to reshape the country’s geopolitical landscape, significantly altering the strategic dynamics in Southeast Asia. The cornerstone of this initiative is the successful maiden flight of the Agni-5 MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle) missile, a culmination of over a decade of research and development by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

The Agni-5 MIRV missile boasts a revolutionary technology that enables a single missile to deploy multiple warheads, each capable of striking distinct targets simultaneously. This capability, possessed by only a handful of nations worldwide, positions India among an elite group of countries with advanced missile technology. PM Modi took to X, formerly Twitter, to express his pride in DRDO scientists, hailing the Mission Divyastra as a significant achievement for India’s defence capabilities.

President of India, Ms Droupadi Murmu, echoed PM Modi’s sentiments, emphasizing the milestone as a pivotal moment in India’s journey towards self-reliance and greater geo-strategic influence. Dr V K Saraswat, former Director General of DRDO and current Member of Science and Technology at NITI Aayog lauded the Agni-5 MIRV as a “huge force multiplier,” particularly in light of India’s no-first-use policy. He highlighted the crucial role of a robust second-strike capability in maintaining deterrence, stressing the importance of India’s achievement in this regard.

Developing a ballistic missile with MIRV technology is an immensely challenging task, requiring precision engineering and advanced avionics systems. The MIRV payload of the Agni-5 enables a single missile to target adversaries across a 5,000-plus km radius, significantly enhancing India’s strategic reach. Dr. Saraswat elaborated on the sophistication of the system, emphasizing the individual guidance and control systems of each warhead within the Agni-5 missile.

The Agni series has been a cornerstone of India’s defence arsenal since the 1990s, with Agni-5 representing the latest iteration of this formidable weapon system. The incorporation of MIRV technology elevates India’s second-strike capability to unprecedented levels, allowing for precision targeting of both stationary and moving targets. Dr Saraswat highlighted the potential applications of the Agni-5 MIRV in targeting moving objects such as ships, underscoring its versatility and efficacy in modern warfare scenarios.
