Shashi Tharoor conferred with France’s Highest Civilian Honour ‘Chevalier de la Legion d’honneur’

Author and diplomat-turned-politician Shashi Tharoor were conferred with France’s top civilian honour ‘Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur’, or Knight of the Legion of Honour, at a ceremony in New Delhi on Tuesday. The Congress MP was conferred the prestigious award at the French Embassy by French Senate President Gerard Larcher.

Author, diplomat, and politician Shashi Tharoor was bestowed with France’s highest civilian honor, the ‘Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur’ (Knight of the Legion of Honour), during a ceremony held in New Delhi on Tuesday. The esteemed award was presented to the Congress Member of Parliament by French Senate President Gerard Larcher at the French Embassy.

“The highest French civilian award was bestowed upon Dr. Tharoor in recognition of his tireless endeavors to strengthen Indo-French relations, his dedication to international peace and cooperation, and his longstanding friendship with France,” stated the French Embassy in a released statement.

The French government had announced the honor for Tharoor in August 2022, but it was officially conferred upon him on Tuesday.

Chairman of the French Senate, Larcher, remarked, “Through his remarkable career as a diplomat, author, and politician, Shashi Tharoor has embraced the world with a thirst for knowledge and an intelligence that has led him to live several lifetimes in one, all in service to India and a better world.”

“Dr. Tharoor is also a genuine friend of France, a Francophone with a profound understanding of France and its culture. Through this award, which I have the privilege to bestow, the French Republic acknowledges your achievements, your friendship, your fondness for France, and your dedication to creating a fairer world,” Larcher expressed.

In his acceptance speech, Tharoor expressed immense gratitude for being bestowed with the Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur.

“As someone who greatly admires France, its people, their refinement, language, and culture, particularly their literature and cinema, I am deeply honored to receive your country’s highest civilian honor.”

“To me, the bestowal of this award upon an Indian signifies a recognition of the deepening ties between France and India, as well as the enduring warmth that has characterized this relationship for a considerable period.”

Tharoor pledged to continue his efforts in fostering greater cooperation between the two nations for the betterment of the global community.
