Skoda Confirms Sub-4 Meter SUV for India, Based on Localized MQB-A0 IN Platform

Mumbai, India – Marking a significant step in its India expansion plans, Skoda Auto India has officially announced the development of its first sub-4-meter SUV specifically designed for the Indian market. This highly anticipated offering will be based on the MQB-A0 IN platform, a localized version of the Volkswagen Group’s global MQB-A0 architecture.

This news comes amidst the booming demand for compact SUVs in India, a segment dominated by players like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and Hyundai. Skoda’s entry into this competitive space reflects its commitment to further strengthen its presence in the Indian market, aiming to tap into the growing demand for feature-rich, premium SUVs in the compact segment.

MQB-A0 IN: Tailored for the Indian Market

The MQB-A0 IN platform, co-developed by Skoda and Volkswagen specifically for the Indian market, offers several advantages. It is highly localized, with over 95% of its components sourced from India, contributing to cost-effectiveness and competitive pricing. Additionally, the platform is designed to meet the specific requirements of Indian roads and driving conditions, ensuring superior safety and performance.

Speaking about the upcoming SUV, Petr Janeba, Brand Director at Skoda Auto India, stated, “This new sub-compact SUV will be the third Škoda product on the MQB-A0-IN platform and will forward the same Škoda DNA of superior driving dynamics and safety as the other two locally developed and produced models Kushaq and Slavia.”

Engine and Features: Anticipation Builds

While details about the engine options and specific features are yet to be revealed, speculations suggest the SUV will likely be powered by a 1.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine, aligning with the sub-4-meter segment’s tax benefits. This engine option is already offered in Skoda’s Kushaq and Slavia models, known for their fuel efficiency and performance.

In terms of features, the SUV is expected to come equipped with a range of modern amenities, including a large touchscreen infotainment system, connected car features, automatic climate control, and a sunroof. Additionally, Skoda is known for prioritizing safety in its vehicles, and this new SUV is likely to adhere to the latest safety regulations and be equipped with advanced safety features like airbags, ABS, and electronic stability control.

Launch Timeline and Competition

The official launch of Skoda’s sub-4-meter SUV is expected in the first half of 2025. This puts it directly in competition with established players like the Maruti Suzuki Brezza, Tata Nexon, and Hyundai Venue, making the segment even more exciting for Indian consumers.

Skoda’s entry into the sub-4-meter SUV segment marks a significant development in the Indian automotive market. With its focus on localization, superior driving dynamics, and a compelling feature set, the upcoming SUV has the potential to be a game-changer, pushing the boundaries of the compact SUV segment in India.
