Spanish Tourist Gang-Raped in Jharkhand Sparks Outrage and Legal Action

A Spanish woman traveling by motorcycle with her husband was gang-raped in Jharkhand, India. The incident occurred near Dumka while the couple camped overnight. The 28-year-old woman and her 64-year-old husband were traveling from Bangladesh to Nepal.

The attack sparked outrage, with singer Chinmayi Sripaada highlighting the need for collective shame alongside national pride. The Jharkhand Police have arrested three out of seven suspects and provided ₹10 lakh compensation to the victim’s husband.

The Spanish Embassy expressed gratitude for the support and emphasized the need to combat violence against women globally. The National Commission for Women (NCW) condemned the incident and urged authorities to expedite the investigation and press stricter charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Adding to the pressure, the Jharkhand High Court took suo motu cognisance of the case and ordered the Dumka SP to submit a report on actions taken against the perpetrators. The case will be heard again on March 7th.
