Spanish Women Gang Raped in Jharkhand’s Dumka

According to sources familiar with the situation, the incident was discovered around 11 p.m. on Friday when the patrol team from Hansdiha Police in Dumka encountered two individuals near the road. They could not understand their language as the individuals were speaking in Spanish.

Police reported that a Spanish woman, traveling with her husband from West Bengal to Nepal, was purportedly gang-raped by seven individuals on Friday night in Kurmahat village, located in the Dumka district of Jharkhand. Authorities added that three of the suspects were apprehended in connection with the incident.

Besides the sexual assault on the woman, who is in her mid-30s, the couple was also thrashed by the accused and robbed of cash and other belongings as they resisted the crime.

The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Dumka, Pitambar Singh Kherwar, stated that three suspects were detained, while special teams established to investigate the case are conducting raids to apprehend the remaining individuals involved.

Sources familiar with the situation revealed that the incident was discovered around 11 p.m. on Friday when the patrolling team of Hansdiha Police in Dumka noticed two individuals near the road. However, they were unable to communicate with them as they were speaking Spanish.

“One of the officials stated that the pair later recounted the incident to the police team with the assistance of Google translation. Subsequently, the police escorted them to Saraiyahat Community Health Centre, where the woman’s gang rape was verified.”

Senior police officers who arrived at the hospital gathered information from the survivor and detained three individuals, who offered some insights into the incident and also provided forensic evidence.

SP Kherwar stated, “Our team became aware of the incident last night. Following confirmation of the assault on the woman after a medical examination and based on the survivor’s statement and our investigation, three individuals were apprehended.”

The SP mentioned that one of the detainees confessed to the crime provided some details about the incident, and disclosed information about other suspects.

“The couple had not informed the police or administration about the establishment of a temporary camp in the village,” Kherwar added, mentioning that an investigative team led by Santosh Kumar, the sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Jarmundi, has been formed to probe the case.

According to officials, the couple, on a tourist visa in India as part of their global bike tour, had previously visited Pakistan and Bangladesh before entering the country via West Bengal.

“They were en route to Nepal through Dumka. Upon reaching there around 5 p.m. on Friday, they set up a makeshift tent in the forest of Kunji Basti, approximately two kilometers from Kurmahat. The assault occurred when local youths attacked them, resulting in the gang rape of the woman,” stated the official above.

SDPO Santosh Kumar mentioned, “We have filed a First Information Report (FIR) based on the victim woman’s complaint. The three individuals are still in custody. Depending on the outcome of the initial investigation, they may be formally arrested.”
