Stray Violence Erupts in Bareilly Amid Mosque Row Protests

SSP Assures Swift Action as Stone-Pelting and Assaults Reported in Shyam Ganj Market

The second FIR was filed by Mohammad Saleem, a resident of Shyamganj, alleging that he was assaulted by a group of people led by Sharma. Saleem’s complaint stated that Sharma and his accomplices attacked him and caused injuries. Saleem also accused them of damaging his property during the altercation.

Both FIRs have been registered, and the police are investigating the incidents to identify and apprehend the individuals involved in the altercations. The tensions arose following the gathering of Muslim individuals in response to Maulana Tauqir Raza’s call to protest the Gyanvapi mosque row in Varanasi.

The police have maintained a heightened state of alertness in Bareilly, particularly in sensitive areas, to prevent any further escalation of tensions and to ensure the safety of the community members. They are closely monitoring the activities of Maulana Tauqir Raza and other religious leaders to preempt any potential disturbances.

According to the complainant, Kapil Kumar Sharma, the incident occurred while he and his friend, Sameer Sagar, were riding a motorcycle. They were intercepted and surrounded by a group of around 60 individuals who proceeded to physically assault them and damage their motorcycle.

In the second FIR, Mustaqeem reported that approximately 25 unidentified individuals, whom he could recognize, attacked him near the Shahmatganj locality as he was returning home after attending Friday prayers. He mentioned that some residents intervened to rescue him, and the attackers fled after issuing threats.

The FIRs have been registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including 147 (for rioting), 323 (for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons), 504 (for insult), and 506 (for criminal intimidation).

Bareilly’s Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ghule Sushil Chandra Bhan, reported that isolated incidents of stone-pelting and chanting slogans were observed at the Shyam Ganj market within the jurisdiction of the Baradari police station in the city. Additionally, he noted that a few individuals assaulted two young individuals in the same vicinity, resulting in minor injuries to both victims. SSP Bhan assured that FIRs have been filed, and stringent measures will be taken against those responsible for causing trouble once they have been identified.
