In a landmark Judgement on Monday, Supreme Court allows a 14-year-old rape survivor to terminate her 28-week pregnancy.
A group led by CJI D Y Chandrachud canceled a decision of the Bombay High Court. They pointed out that doctors at Sion Hospital say keeping the pregnancy might harm the young girl’s body and mind.
They also mentioned that although there are risks, the doctors think ending the pregnancy isn’t riskier than giving birth.
The judges asked the Dean of Sion Hospital to handle the abortion for the young girl.

On April 22, the Supreme Court decided that a 14-year-old girl who was raped in Maharashtra should have an abortion. She’s almost 30 weeks pregnant. The State government will cover all the costs and medical care.

The decision was made based on advice from doctors, who said the pregnancy would harm the girl physically and emotionally. They said there’s some risk with the abortion, but it’s not more dangerous than giving birth.

The court said that because the girl’s well-being was at risk and the situation was urgent, it was necessary to allow the abortion.
According to the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, women, including rape survivors and minors, can terminate pregnancies up to 24 weeks.
