The inaugural helicopter emergency medical service in India is set to launch from the state of Uttarakhand.

Under the project ‘Sanjeevani’, the helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) spearheaded by Scindia is currently in the process of assembly.

Good news for residents of Uttarakhand, particularly those in remote areas: India’s first Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) is set to launch in the state, bringing critical care closer than ever before.

This initiative, aptly named “Sanjeevani,” will be based at the prestigious All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh. A dedicated helicopter will be stationed there, ready to airlift patients within a 150 km radius to receive timely medical attention at the facility.

“This service is a game-changer for emergency medical care in Uttarakhand,” declared Union Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. “The ‘golden hour’ after an accident is crucial, and HEMS will ensure patients reach specialized care as quickly as possible, regardless of their location.”

The helicopter currently undergoing assembly and certification, but its arrival is eagerly awaited. This launch comes on the heels of the inauguration of the expanded terminal building at Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, further signifying the state’s commitment to improved air connectivity.

The HEMS initiative isn’t the only feather in Uttarakhand’s aviation cap. The government plans to upgrade three airports (Dehradun, Pant Nagar, and Pithoragarh) and increase the number of heliports to 21. These developments align with the state’s Helipad and Heliport Policy 2023, aimed at strengthening emergency and disaster response capabilities in challenging terrains.

This multi-pronged approach promises to transform healthcare accessibility in Uttarakhand. Residents, especially those in remote areas, can now breathe easier knowing that critical care is just a helicopter ride away. The launch of HEMS marks a significant step forward in ensuring timely and efficient medical intervention for all, saving lives and bringing hope to countless individuals.
